What was built
A countdown that lives entirely in its link
Pixel Countdown is a free, production-deployed web application for creating countdowns to any date or time. Each countdown becomes a clean URL that can be shared directly or embedded on another website—without requiring an account.
The challenge
Most countdown products depend on user accounts and stored records. The goal was to make the experience immediate while keeping the application lightweight: configure a timer, copy one permanent link, and trust that every visitor sees the same target moment in their own timezone.
The solution
I designed the product around a stateless URL architecture. The countdown title, target timestamp, display format, and optional background reference are validated and encoded into a compact base64url token. Astro renders public countdown pages on demand with unique metadata, while the browser updates the display on wall-clock boundaries for accurate ticking.
The result is a fast application with no countdown database. Static marketing and legal pages are prerendered, while token-based countdown and embed routes use server-side rendering on Cloudflare's Workers runtime.

Engineering decisions
Keeping countdown state in the URL removes database operations, account management, and expiration logic from the core product. Input constraints and URL validation protect every decode path. Uploaded images are the only externally stored content and are processed before being sent through a guarded server endpoint.
The project includes unit tests for its core logic, a documented manual QA checklist, structured metadata, responsive layouts, and deployment configuration for Cloudflare.
Deployment
Pixel Countdown is deployed publicly at pixelcountdown.com. The source is available on GitHub.
